Abstract

Purpose: This study was to review female smokers¡¯ experiences of the process of smoking cessation attempts and examined how these experiences change over time.

Methods: This study was qualitative research by grounded theory methodology. Data were analyzed by Strauss & Corbin's grounded theory method. 17 female smokers with at least one smoking cessation attempt, and who voluntarily provided informed consent, were enrolled in this study.

Results: The core category of female smokers¡¯ quit attempts was ¡°Becoming a full member of the society.¡± The causative condition was ¡°Seeing myself as a deviation from the society.¡± The context was ¡°Assessment of smoking cessation resources,¡± and action/interaction strategy was ¡°Attempt to achieve normalization.¡± ¡°a crossroads of success and failure¡± was identified as the consequence of these processes.

Conclusion: The study presented various antismoking strategies used by female smokers, who recognize themselves as deviating from society, evaluate various resources to help stop smoking, and interact with others in their environment. These findings call for a comprehensive understanding of female smokers' attempts to quit smoking, which should be correctly identified to provide the necessary nursing interventions to help their members stay healthy.
